EDITOR’S NOTE: Starting in March, I (Todd Fuqua) began teaching an after-school journalism class to students at White Mountain Elementary, with the purpose of showing them the realities of writing and publishing. This story and photos is one of the results of their efforts.

The season for the Dream Pandas, my 5th grade team, kicked off with playing the Purple People Eaters. The teachers first played Rock-Paper-Scissors to see who would kick first.

Fortunately for the Dream Pandas we won, so we got to kick first. We were all pumped up when the Dream Pandas lined up to kick.

Our first kicker was Fernando Segovia. Our first-up kickers earned five runs. After the first inning, the score was 5-2 in our favor.

When the second inning started, the Dream Pandas scored two additional runs, making the run count 7-2. With the Purple People Eaters back up to kick, four more points were gained. The score was now standing at 7-6.

With it almost tied, the Dream Pandas had a lot of pressure on their hands. We managed to get four more points. We were feeling confident of winning now. The Purple People Eaters were nervous when they came up to kick. They pulled it together, scoring another six points. They won, but it was still a good game.
